New Orleans hangs in the balance. For every sign of recovery there is a sign of loss. I remain optimistic, but tempered with realism. We need to be rebuilt and the country owes us. We are owed because the city was devastated by the negligence and incompetnence of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (a federal agency), which built poorly engineered flood protection despite the knowledge that this system would fail. We are owed because of everything we've given to this country. Over the last two hundred years New Orleans has contributed trillions of dollars in growth to the United States thanks to our coast line, our river, our port facilities, and our oil and natural gas reserves. Our cultural contributions are simply priceless. So what are we owed? Let's just take a conservative estimate:
Of course that figure of $30 billion, of course, doesn't include the 800+ schools that were destroyed or the tens of thousands of businesses we lost. Thanks for your support! |
